Early Literacy Resources for Parents
What Is Early Literacy?
On this page, you'll find resources available to expose your child to early literacy development opportunities at the library and in Scott County. Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. At the library, we're intentional about providing an enriching experience for your little one. Our library classes, storytimes, and children’s areas are planned around the Every Child Ready to Read’s 5 Practices (PDF) of talking, singing, reading, writing and playing.
Visiting the Library with Little Ones
Visiting the library early and often is a great way to raise a reader. All our libraries have children’s areas with engaging early literacy activities and great books for families to read and borrow.
Visiting Tips
- Help your child prepare for a visit by reading our Welcome to My Library Poster (PDF) together.
- Make library visits routine so the library can be seen as a fun and familiar place to be.
- Having a tough day with your little one? We understand! Give us a call before your visit and let us know their favorite topics - we'll happily set items aside for you to make their visit go more smoothly.
Events, Early Literacy Classes, & Storytimes - View Calendar
Many of our storytimes are called Early Literacy Classes to better describe their purpose. Library staff leading the classes are trained in the Public Library Association's Every Child Ready to Read curriculum that builds a base for children to read in the future by purposefully using the five early literacy practices mentioned.
The Smart Play Spot at the Shakopee Library
In 2013, the Children’s Museum of Minnesota installed an interactive learning area in the Shakopee Library with help from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage (Legacy) Fund and matching grants from the Shakopee community. Children of all ages are welcome at the Smart Play Spot (PDF) during the library’s open hours. Learn more about the Smart Play Spot in this short video from the Children's Museum.
Being a new parent can be tough, so here are some available supports to support you and your child's literacy development.
Family Resource Centers
Family Resource Centers of Scott County are places where parents can connect to services, resources, information, and support. We host FRC programming at the Shakopee Library several days a week with colleagues from across the County. If your family is dealing with a sensitive issue and you need someone to talk to, FRCs are here for you. Cultural navigators are also available. Learn more about FRCs.
Early Childhood Screening
Early Childhood Screening is a process that supports your child being ready for Kindergarten and gives you an opportunity to connect with your local school district. Starting at age 3, children can be screened free of charge. To find screening opportunities in Scott County see one of the flyers English/Spanish (PDF), English/Russian (PDF), and English/Somali (PDF) or contact your local school district.
